Description:

East Asia, China, Late Qing Dynasty to Early Republic, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An ornately carved stone dragon amulet boasting intricate details - bulging eyes, long snout with flames and/or plumes of smoke emerging, prone legs beneath its curled up body, an extended tail. The dragon figure is an ancient Chinese symbol - the earliest known date to ca. 4700 BCE. Looking beyond this magical iconography, the stone itself is inherently beautiful, with its seafoam green hue and silky smooth finish. During the Qing Dynasty, while some decorative works declined, stone carving attained a high level of technique as exemplified by this piece. A wonderful example perforated through the tail for suspension. Size: 1.875" L x 1.5" W (4.8 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: private collection of the late Karming Wong; approximate date of acquisition: late 1970 to early 1980
