East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. late 19th century CE. A sizable porcelain vase of a broad, apple-shaped form depicting figures of nobility riding with an entourage throughout the countryside. Several soldiers clad in armor hold lengthy polearms while managing the path of the riders, as attendees hold enormous fans to keep the royal couple comfortable throughout their journey. The figures, decorative borders, and foliage scenery are brought to life with vibrant swaths of pigment that is sealed with a layer of clear glaze. Size: 10.4" in diameter x 8.6" H (26.4 cm x 21.8 cm)
