East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A charming glazed terracotta sage, painted with bright colors and with a lifelike sculpted countenance. He stands with his head slightly tilted downward, as if in contemplation, holding a large gong slung over his shoulder. His robes are painted deep wine red with long purple cuffs. His face is left buff, while his topknot and long beard have been glazed white. Size: 5.1" W x 13.45" H (13 cm x 34.2 cm)

  • Condition: Light wear to surface commensurate with age. Head reattached at neck. Beard and front of robe have been repaired and sideburns are lost. Fine craquelure to the glaze. Old collection number written on lower interior.
