Description:

China / South China Sea, ca. 1822 CE. This is a lovely white porcelain bowl with a delicate flower pattern in blue around the interior and exterior. The bowl was recovered from the shipwreck of the Tek Sing ("True Star"), a Chinese junk over 180 feet (55 m) in length that foundered on a reef near the island of Java in 1822. The ship sunk quickly due to its immensely heavy cargo, much of which was porcelain like this, that had been bound for the markets of Southeast Asia. In fact, the ship was carrying roughly 350,000 individual pieces of porcelain! The ship was salvaged in 1999 in accordance with Indonesian maritime law, allowing the porcelain to finally be traded -- albeit to a rather different market! Size: 4.9" W x 2.4" H (12.4 cm x 6.1 cm).
