Description:

East Asia, China, ca. 19th century CE. A fascinating 10 panel leatherbound "pillow book" made of composite board and featuring 5 masterfully drawn and painted watercolor erotic scenes. Intended as a present from a mother to her daughter on her wedding day, pillow books detail instructions on the art of love making. As many pillow books were destroyed in the early days of Communist China, most that survived have been cut into individual scenes and sold as small paintings, making this museum-quality book quite the rarity! Size when open: 44" L x 7.125" H (111.8 cm x 18.1 cm) Size when closed: 4.625" L x 1.25" W x 7.125" H (11.7 cm x 3.2 cm x 18.1 cm)
