Originally offered at $500...

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A cylindrical pillow made from lacquered leather stretched over bamboo slats with a continuous painted scene of birds, chrysanthemums, and butterflies in matte and metallic pigments on a brown ground. The end cap panels are black with a simple gilt landscape and faint characters. Soft pillows were considered bad for one's health and energy, harder pillows with symbolic images helped influence dreams and shaping the sleeper's unconsciousness - blue birds are harbingers of happiness! Size: 11.375" L x 4.5" Diameter (28.9 cm x 11.4 cm)
