Description:

**Originally Listed At $800**

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A massive stoneware Martaban style wine pitcher glazed in a glossy black hue with silvery iridescence throughout! The raised motifs across the shoulder include bamboo leave and bats- auspicious creatures of good luck and fertility. Within the cartouches are Chinese characters that translate to "tonic wine." Martaban glaze was popular throughout Southeast Asia and China for centuries and traded along maritime routes. The name likely stems from the name of the Burmese city Martaban (now Mottama), a major ship port. Size: 14" Diameter x 19" H (35.6 cm x 48.3 cm)
