Description:

East Asia, China, ca. 19th century to early 20th century CE. One of my favorites! An elegant dark lacquer bamboo domed birdcage with a functioning sliding door at its lowest level. The body is adjustable in height using small metal clips. A decorative carved wood opening low on the body features fantastical animals and could be used for inserting food or water into the cage. Two further small wood decorative clips adorn the lower sides, each with a zoomorphic motif. A bonsai-like branch is at the center and blue-on-white porcelain cups are held by clips together at one side for food and water. A large brass hook is at the top, allowing suspension, which is stamped at its base with a small maker's mark (see photo). The base stands on low feet, their surfaces carved with pretty abstract reliefs. Size at full height: 21.5" W x 53.5" H (54.6 cm x 135.9 cm); size at lowest height (it is adjustable): 21.5" W x 38" H (54.6 cm x 96.5 cm)
