Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A large carved soapstone seal, an elongated cuboid in form, with seals on both ends. These seals are composed of incised characters and both are covered in red ink from use. The green-grey sides of the soapstone also feature incised characters. Chop marks or chops are the Western names for this traditional Chinese (and other East Asian) signature method. Size: 0.95" W x 3.95" H (2.4 cm x 10 cm)

Provenance: private collection of the late Karming Wong; approximate date of acquisition: late 1970 to early 1980
