East Asia, China, late Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A gilt wooden relief image of a seated Buddha figure on a lotus base within a flaming pointed throne. He holds his hands in the Bhumisparsa mudra, with his right hand over the right knee reaching towards the ground and the palm inward and touching the lotus throne. His left hand lies open in his lap. This mudra represents the moment of his awakening, as he defeated the demon Mara, and claimed the earth as his witness to his enlightenment. Two Chinese characters are incised on the back. This relief image is slotted into a separate, contemporary wooden base with further lotus motifs. Size: 4.7" W x 7.05" H (11.9 cm x 17.9 cm)
