Description:

South America, Chile, ca. 19th century CE. A skillfully carved pair of wooden stirrups worn by Chilean cowboys known as huasos, each with an iron band around its midsection surmounted by a suspension bar and leather strap. The decorative implements present pointed, upward-curving toes with abstract relief motifs, while the iron band is embellished by geometric patterns in lustrous nickel silver. Each sturdy leather strap features a metal suspension ring for attaching to the saddle. Generally found in Chile's central valley, huasos are an important part of Chilean folkloric culture and play a vital role in parades, fiestas, holidays, and popular music. Size of larger (both about the same): 6.2" L x 4.7" W x 16.5" H (15.7 cm x 11.9 cm x 41.9 cm)

  • Condition: Some light surface wear with some nicks and abrasions to wood and natural age fissures to leather. Otherwise, both are intact and excellent with rich patina and nicely preserved decoration.
