Description:

North America, Native American, Georgia, USA, Cherokee, ca. 19th century CE. A woven basket, made from thin strips of wood, colored using black walnut and blood root. The basket's base is roughly square, with rounded sides and a pattern of black and orange woven through natural wood. Baskets were hugely important to the Cherokee, acting as storage devices, strainers, and aids for hunting and fishing. They were woven by women. Size: 18.7" W x 6.25" H (47.5 cm x 15.9 cm)

Provenance: private Illinois, USA collection; ex Alan Stout collection, Georgia, USA; Alan Stout is a prolific collector of museum quality fossils and artifacts.
