Description:

Central/Eastern European, probably Germany, ca. 19th century CE. A forged-steel helmet of a decorative form meant to resemble a mid-17th century style pot helmet. The hemispherical dome features a shallow central crest that stretches between the front and the top of the articulating lobster tail back flap as well as a pair of elongated ear flaps along the lateral peripheries. Attached to the hinged front visor is a broad, wire-form face guard with a flared lower hook perhaps meant as a training visor for entry-level soldiers.   • Condition: Modern replacements to cloth brow lining and interior ear flap straps. Minor abrasions and indentations to dome and tail. Nice dark patina. Visor hinge still articulates smoothly, and lobster tail lames are slightly sticky when moving.
