Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bantu culture, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A pair of wooden headrests with a silky texture and lustrous coloration from touch and age. One is supported on the back of a horned animal and the other upon 4 legs. Headrests were used while sleeping to protect intricate coiffures that could take hours to arrange, and hairstyles were important parts of identity to convey the wealth, marriage status, age, and gender of the wearer. Size of animal rest: 6.25" L x 3" W x 6" H (15.9 cm x 7.6 cm x 15.2 cm)
