Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma (modern day Myanmar), ca. late 19th century CE. A finely carved wooden deity or mythical being with avian creatures above and beneath (viewable from the sides); this depiction of birds and human suggests a representation of a Kinnara, one of a pair of half human, half bird lovers associated with the Kayah and Shan states. The figure stands with hands held upward as if supporting a column akin to a caryatid figure, of a slender, dynamic form with slightly bent legs and upraised arms, an oversized visage with closed eyes, pursed lips, and large ears, wearing a riveted headband and form-hugging garment tied with a long sash, his feet hovering upon an orb-like 'capital' trimmed by a repeated stylized leaf motif. In addition, finely carved birds grace the side of the piece, one pressing its beaked head under the human figure's thigh, another perched above with nicely delineated wing and tail feathers. Custom wood stand. Size: 16.125" H (41 cm); 19.25" H (48.9 cm) with stand.
