Southeast Asia, Burma, 19th to early 20th century CE. A panel carved in high relief showing a scene of an audience with the Buddha. It is made up of multiple flat panels of wood and also has an added metallic element on one figure's head. Like much Buddhist art, it is full of rich symbolism. The Buddha's hands are positioned in the Bhumisparsa or 'earth witness' mudra, and he is seated in half lotus position. At his feet is a rooster, a common symbol associated with the Buddha in Burmese and Thai art. His petitioners are dressed in a variety of clothing showing them to be high ranking officials; the women petitioners are both painted with white faces, indicating the use of thanaka (thanahka), a traditional cosmetic paste made from ground bark that has been used by Burmese women (and to a lesser extent men) since the 14th century at least. The temple the figures are positioned in is brightly painted, with golden, flame-like arch pediments that are a common feature of the monumental temple architecture of Burma, as at Bagan. Red curtains have been drawn back, revealing a painted scene that may indicate mountain scenery with blue skies beyond. Along the base is Burmese writing in white. - Condition: Wear to paint and wood as shown. With some age cracking to the unpainted surfaces of the wood and one crack in the lower left (facing) that is in the painted surface, as well as one separation area near the Buddha's upper body.
