Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar) ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A fine cast-brass set of five opium weights in the form of stylized elephants atop tiered bases. Each weight is comprised of a singular elephant on an integral pedestal with an incised linear motif. The elephant stands on its four legs with the trunk hanging down between the two tusks as additional support. Each weight is covered in fine layers of dark brown, nearly black patina. These weights would have been used with a two-pan style of scale. The weight of each are (from heaviest to lightest) 298.1 grams, 185.4 grams, 132.6 grams, 80 grams, and 60.6 grams. Size largest weight: 2" L x 2" H (5.1 cm x 5.1 cm); 10.625" L x 2.75" H (27 cm x 7 cm); on included custom stand.
