Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), Mandalay period, ca. 19th century CE. A lacquered wood and three-dimensional carved sculpture of the Buddha, standing upright on a circular base that was probably part of a larger pedestal. The face is sensitively carved, calm, with glass eyes and the red surface has remains of the gilt and he wears flowing robes hat is carved with drapes and folds. The Buddha is standing with hands at his sides and open in a welcoming gesture. Size: 11.25" L x 3.25" W x 21" H (28.6 cm x 8.3 cm x 53.3 cm)

Provenance: private Arlington, Texas, USA collection, acquired mid to late-1960s

  • Condition: Loss to nose and missing one glass inlay. Chips and abrasions to thumb. Surface wear commensurate with age and exposure. Dark red lacquer was added more recently and covers areas of the original surface pigments and gilt. Heavy dust buildup on surface.
