Description:

Southeast Asia, Golden Triangle of Thailand, Burma (modern day Myanmar), and Laos, Hill Tribe, ca. 1800 to 1850 CE. Imbued with great symbolic value, a finely carved wooden enlightened Buddha seated in half lotus position upon a pedestal, all beautifully adorned with red lacquer, yellow pigment, and gold gilding. Buddha's hands display the Bhumisparsha mudra (meaning "touching the earth"), with his right hand over the right knee reaching towards the ground and the palm inward and touching the lotus throne. His left hand lies in his lap with the palm upright. This mudra represents the moment of his awakening, as he defeated the demon Mara, and claimed the earth as his witness to his enlightenment. He wears a sanghati with simple pleats and a long, central sash to the waist, presents a tranquil visage with closed eyes and a gentle smile, with characteristically elongated ears, an incised curly coiffure, and a pronounced flamed ushnisha which represents the spiritual intensity of the Buddha. The front side of the pedestal still shows signs of inscribed text probably written in Tai-Kadai, the language of Laos and Thailand, or a regional variant. Note, the artistry and careful workmanship involved in creating this piece indicates that it may have been a cherished image from a family shrine. A very rare example created by a Hill Tribe sculptor of the Golden Triangle, replete with strong carving technique, lustrous gilding, and religious symbolism. Size: 3.125" W x 8.625" H (7.9 cm x 21.9 cm)
