Southeast Asia, Burma/Myanmar, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful gilt brass statue of Buddha heavily adorned in in an elaborate crown surrounding an ushnisha and flanked by wing-like projections. Seated in full lotus position atop a double lotus throne, Buddha sits with his hands in the Calling Earth to Witness mudra or Bhumisparsha with his left hand open with an upward-facing palm and his right hand downward that represents the moment just prior to attaining enlightenment. Size: 7.7" W x 13.5" H (19.6 cm x 34.3 cm)

Provenance: private Arlington, Texas, USA collection, acquired mid to late-1960s

  • Condition: Some nicks, chips, indentations, and abrasions commensurate with age as shown, as well as some bending to ears and crown and small perforation / area of loss to left side of base. Minor area of white pigment to verso and encrustations to interior. Otherwise, very nice with great remaining detail and impressive preservation of gilding. Rich patina to surface.
