Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma ( present day Myanmar), Ava Period, ca. 19th century CE. An impressive wooden flame, hand-carved, with feather- and scale-like relief motifs on its surface. This item was designed to be placed onto a roof edge or apex of a temple, transforming the structure into a large piece of sculpture and emphasizing mythological concepts. Flame-like projections like this one suggest the fins of the mystical serpent, the naga, and the feathers of the mythical bird, the garuda. Size: 11" W x 39" H (27.9 cm x 99.1 cm); 42" H (106.7 cm) on included custom stand.
