Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma (modern day Myanmar), ca. mid-19th century CE. Solid bronze cast buddha shown seated peacefully in full lotus position on a three-legged throne before a simple mandorla, his hands in the Bhumisparasa mudra which translates as the earth touching gesture. Buddha statues that present this mudra are known as earth witness Buddhas. The historical Shakyamuni Buddha is here seen seated with his right hand as a pendant over the right knee extending and reaching toward the ground with the palm facing inward while touching his throne. The left hand rests in his lap with the palm upright. This particular gesture represents the precise moment of the Buddha's awakening as he claims the earth as the witness of his enlightenment. An endearing example. Size: 2.25" W x 4" H (5.7 cm x 10.2 cm).
