Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine and playable example of a large series of three bronze gongs, decreasing in size as they hang down from a mahogany wood and rope framework. Also a wooden mallet with a fabulous bright orange fabric covering. Burmese gongs are recognizable because of their prominent boss (nipple) in the center, just slightly recessed from the rest of the gong body. The patina - caused by oxidation - is deliberately left even when the gongs are being played, or is sometimes selectively cleaned away to create patterns like lotus flowers or stars. Size of largest gong: 11.3" W (28.7 cm); size of complete item when hung: 11.3" W x 80" H (28.7 cm x 203.2 cm)
