Burma, 19th century CE. This is a pair of bronze cast kneeling monks decorated with traces of black lacquer and gold leaf. The monks kneel on lotus flowers with long, curving stems. They wear simple prayer sashes and have their feet folded underneath them, their heads bowed, their hands clasped together. The Shan people originally came from China to Burma approximately one thousand years ago and have influenced the history of southeast Asia since the fall of the Mongol Empires. As rulers of many small kingdoms, they were known for their patronage of Buddhism and establishment of religious centres. These elegant monks kneeling peacefully atop their lotus flowers are a potent reminder of the influence that the Shan people have played on Buddhist art. Size of one, with stand: 19" H x 9" L x 3-1/2" W (48 cm x 23 cm x 9 cm).
