Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 19th century CE. A set of 9 cast leaded-brass and bronze weights in the form of stylized zoomorphic creatures standing atop bases. Most are birds (karaweik and hintah) with crested heads, but one is a mythical animal known as a "toe" with hooved feet and a feline's head. Animal-shaped weights were a charming tool used to weigh not just opium but any item that needed to be weighed - food, raw materials, and metals. After the British occupied Burma in 1885, they introduced flat, round iron weights that replaced these whimsical bronze examples. Size of largest: 1.5" L x 1.5" W x 2.5" H (3.8 cm x 3.8 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: private Arlington, Texas, USA collection, acquired mid to late-1960s
