Description:

Western Europe, England, Aldershot, ca. mid-19th century CE. A wonderful football from the early days of association football (or soccer). The ball consists of ## H-shaped leather panels that are sewn together to form a durable sphere, and a thick cord across the center secures a vulcanized rubber bladder within. The invention of vulcanization by Charles Goodyear in 1838 meant footballs did not have to be inflated multiple times during a game and could better withstand variations in temperature. A manufacturer's label on one side reads "J. Salter & Son Manufacturers, Aldershot" and another reads "Made in England." Size: 8.1" Diameter (20.6 cm)

Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection; ex-Allan Davis collection
