Description:

United Kingdom, Late Victorian Period, 1897 CE. On 22 June of 1897, the British Empire - centered in London - celebrated Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee with parades and processions through the streets of the city. Hundreds of thousands of people attended, from all over the UK, Europe, the Empire, and the United States. Although VIPs got special viewing stands, middle- and working-class people stood on the pavement and in open areas like Green Park and Trafalgar Square. In amongst all of these people were an ever-present feature of Victorian life - street vendors hawking souvenirs and memorabilia. It is easy to imagine a member of the British middle class, someone who had taken one of the special excursion trains laid on for the occasion into central London, purchasing this cup with the intent of remembering the momentous event forever. This is an enamelware cup with a band of gilt just below the rim and decorations showing a sepia portrait of an older Victoria on one side and a sepia painting of Osborne House, Victoria's private family home on the Isle of Wight. The years of her reign, the royal crest, and various other designs complete the piece. Size: 3.45" W x 3.75" H (8.8 cm x 9.5 cm)
