Description:

Oceania, Indonesia, Borneo, Kayanic Dayak Complex, Dayak peoples, ca. second half of the 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask, of a slender form, depicting the guise of a guardian spirit. The expressive countenance presents bulging hemispherical eyes above carved eye slits, a short nose above a tapered upper lip, two rows of incised teeth, a blocky chin, and raised curvilinear motifs suggestive of ritual scarification marks across the cheeks and brow. Dark-brown paint is applied atop the entire mask, and a thick reed strand on the verso enables the wearer to hold the mask in front of their face with their teeth. Size: 5.125" W x 11.2" H (13 cm x 28.4 cm); 16.3" H (41.4 cm) on included custom stand.
