Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, Kalimantan region, Dayak, Ngadju or Ot Danum people, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A rare and well-preserved ceremonial mat depicting a "soul ship" woven from rattan. Split slats are laid flat in tight rows, their ends plaited and woven together, the surface dyed a black hue to illustrate a funerary scene of a ship traveling to the afterlife with gongs, flags, and several figures that represent spirits guiding a soul. This mat may have been used for placing under the body of the deceased during the first burial, and again during the secondary funeral known as “tiwah” in which the body or bones are exhumed and cleansed. The mat is mounted on a modern cotton textile stretched over a wood frame, ready to display! Size: 69" L x 35.3" W (175.3 cm x 89.7 cm)
