Native American, Montana, Blackfoot, ca. late 19th century CE. A sharp knife with an iron blade and a wooden handle fitted with a handsome, hand-sewn sheath made of animal hide and decorated with a traditional Blackfoot cross-like motif comprised of wound colorful porcupine quills that were painted red, yellow, blue, and white. In addition, a looped hide handle and two decorative tassels wrapped with colorful quills and presenting feathered termini grace the sheath. Size: knife measures 8.5" L (21.6 cm); blade measures 4.125" L (10.5 cm); sheath measures 8" L (20.3 cm) + 3" L (7.6 cm) tassels

  • Condition: One element of hardware attaching wooden handle to blade was replaced, albeit some time ago. Normal wear and areas of oxidation to the blade. Some losses to colorful wrapped fibers decorating the sheath and tassels. Minor losses to feathers at termini of tassles. "Blackfoot, Montana" handwritten on back of sheath.
