Description:

European, German, 19th century. Porcelain vase by Konigliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin. Signed by Otto Weiss. Cancelled makers mark on the underside of the base. A stunning porcelain vase decorated with an elegant grapevine motif that is further embellished with luminous bands of gold wash around the rim and base. This vase was manufactured by Konigliche Porzellan-Manufactur which was founded in Berlin by Frederick the Great in 1763 and designed by Otto Weiss in the 19th century. Size: 14.5" H (36.8 cm)

KPM Statement: "The Konigliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin looks back on a history of over 250 years. Seven kings and emperors have shaped its history. The most important artists and designers of their time have implemented contemporary designs in perfected craftsmanship for the manufactory. KPM Berlin is committed to its tradition, preserves its cultural heritage and has always strived to be contemporary and timelessly relevant. This is how masterful product icons have been created since 1763, giving the significant moments in life - both small and large - the precious setting they deserve." (KPM Berlin website)

Please Note: While there are several "Weiss" names in ceramics, we were able to identify a Berlin (K.P.M.) oval plaque that was also signed Osk Weiss which sold at Christie's New York (lot 70 in "19th C. Decorative Arts - Antiquities and Grand Tour" - April 29, 1999). Our assumption is that the Weiss signature on this vase belongs to this same designer, thus associating him with K.P.M. of Berlin, a revered porcelain manufacturer known for hiring the most accomplished designers.
