Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful wood door lintel panel featuring 3 faces of protective demons carved in high relief and adorned in white, black, and red pigments. Each boasting an evocative expression, the visages display huge, bulging eyes, arched brows, bow-shaped ears, and broad mouths; the 2 on the ends with open smiles exposing tab-shaped teeth. A lintel like this would have likely been placed over the entrance to the house, with the masks believed to grant protection to the inhabitants of the home. A rare and remarkable example! Size: 49.3" L x 4.1" W x 6.3" H (125.2 cm x 10.4 cm x 16 cm)
