Description:

Central Asia, Azerbaijan / Iran, Shahsevan culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful square panel woven from wool using the soumak tapestry technique that almost resembles embroidery. The supplementary weft threads are wrapped over warp that strengthen and add density to the textile to withstand heavy use since this panel was once part of a bag for storing items or as a curtain over a baby cradle. The people of this region were semi-nomadic, transporting their possessions in ornate saddle bags woven by women, the abstract geometric pattern symbolizing spiritual and tribal identity. Size: 21" L x 20" W (53.3 cm x 50.8 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, acquired December 2016; ex Material Culture; ex Maryanne Conheim collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
