Description:

Southeast Asia, Indochina / Philippines, Ifugao, ca. early 20th century CE. A fine set of wood arrows in a woven rattan quiver basket, with a wood crossbow, the trigger made from bone with braided ratan cords and a drawstring. This Austroasiatic style crossbow is perhaps from an Indochinese culture as they were popular hunting weapon in Southeast Asia, from Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia to northern Vietnam and southern China. The arrow bolts are sharpened sticks, and may have been laced with poison for hunting, warfare, and as a stealthy tactic to fight colonizers - if these small arrows were removed from the body, the cause of death might not be determined. Size of crossbow: 37" L x 24.5" W (94 cm x 62.2 cm); quiver w/ arrows: 39.56" L x 3.5" W (100.5 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Dr. Gallagher collection, Sydney, Australia, 1960 - 2000
