Description:

Central Europe, Austrian Empire, Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, ca. mid-19th century CE. A crucifix made from high quality 85% to 90% silver with Jesus Christ in the center, his arms outstretched and rays of light emanating from the corners. At the top is a plaque with the Latin inscription "INRI," under his feet is the Golgotha skull and crossbones, and below that are 3 stamped hallmarks. These are pre-unitarian Italian silver marks, from the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, modern day Venice. The discernable two include a globe surrounded by 7 stars for the silver fineness, and a stern ornament for the Venetian assay office. The tip of each crucifix arm has openwork scrolls for suspension, and the piece is mounted on a red velvet covered board. Size of cross: 8" L x 4.75" W (20.3 cm x 12.1 cm); backing panel: 9.25" L x 6.5" W (23.5 cm x 16.5 cm); silver quality: 85% to 90%
