Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand or Cambodia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. Intricately carved, a wooden coconut grater presenting a prone rabbit with laid back ears, round eyes, a pleasantly plump body, and a perky tail at the front end. The plant-eating mammal seems to have a mouthful of leafy greens, and an iron grater emerges in front of these. The bunny lies upon an oval-shaped section that is also carved with leafy tendrils. Behind him is a beautiful flower in full bloom that is just as large as the rabbit. The entire top surface is framed by an elaborate border. On the underside is an inscription with initials, and two separately carved rectangular sections serving as legs are fitted to it. Size: 19.375" L x 4.25" W x 6.25" H (49.2 cm x 10.8 cm x 15.9 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private De Roche collection, Piedmont, California, USA
