South America, Argentina or Uruguay, Pampas region, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A matched pair of high quality 72.6% to 89.8% silver and leather gaucho riding spurs with etched heel bands, vine patterning, and flower shaped terminal buttons for the leather straps. The U-shaped bands are etched with scrolling floral motifs and the initials "AG." The chain-link strap is a decorative element that would loosely wrap around the ankle via a loop hook closure. While functional, these were largely a status symbol to demonstrate horse ownership, as only the wealthy could afford the animals and luxurious silver spurs such as these. Size: 7" L x 4.25" W (17.8 cm x 10.8 cm); silver quality: 72.6% to 89.8%; weight: 635 grams
