Description:

South America, Post-Colonial Period, Argentina ca. 19th to early 20th century CE; Western Europe, Germany, late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A collection of 5 pieces of silver and nickel-silver riding tack- stirrups, bit, and medallion. The nickel-silver bell-type stirrups or estribos were popular in Argentina from the mid-late 19th to early 20th century, often imported from Europe, and clear baroque influenced designs with ladies emerging from cornucopias. The nickel silver bit is German with stylized tulip cheek plates and iron ring bit- stamped on the interior "Solingen." The single stirrup is nickel-silver, dating from the 19th to early 20th century, possibly from Europe or South America. The ovoid 89.59% medallion is the Argentinian coat of arms - this iteration of the motif was designed in 1863 - the 3 suspension rings suggest use as a gaucho belt ornament or decorative horse tack. Size of bell stirrup: 5.75" L x 3" W x 7.5" H (14.6 cm x 7.6 cm x 19 cm); medallion: 2.3" L x 2" W (5.8 cm x 5.1 cm) silver quality: 89.59%; weight: 34.6 grams
