Description:

South America, Argentina & Uruguay, Pampas region, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A matching pair of leather riding stirrups, the discoidal panels are entirely leather, riveted together with iron nails and a pierced openwork pattern. The largest opening serves as the footrest and the thick leather attachment straps are integral to the stirrup panels, and loop upward to an iron buckle for securing to the saddle. Gaucho cowboys were proud of their station and took immense care of their tack, stirrups were symbols of their elite status. The leather and wood stirrups were likely made by the gaucho himself and maintained with regular cleaning - hence the lovely preservation of this pair! Size of stirrup panels: 6" Diameter x 0.75" W (15.2 cm x 1.9 cm); straps: 21" L x 1" W (53.3 cm x 2.5 cm)
