Description:

**Originally Listed At $600**

Native American, Southwestern USA, Apache people, ca. 1880s CE. A beautifully preserved example of a woven burden basket, its surface decorated with leather strips and dangling, conical tin cones that are a common feature of Apache burden baskets and that jangle with any movement. A contrasting dark and light geometric pattern is woven into bands around the body. This is a functional item, with the tin cones made to frighten away snakes as one carries the basket through the desert landscape, using it to gather food and other raw materials. Size: 12.45" W x 10.7" H (31.6 cm x 27.2 cm)

Provenance: private S.S. collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from the Cameron Trading Post
