Description:

Antonio Frilli (Italian / Florentine, 19th century). Marble sculpture, n.d. Hand-signed "A. Frilli / Firenze" at lower left verso. A gorgeous alabaster sculpture by Florentine artist Antonio Frilli depicting the bust of a young woman crowned by a wreath of laurel leaves as she gazes upward to her left. Supported by a long, slender neck and sloping bare shoulders, her veristic visage features large, doe-like eyes, a symmetric nose, and a gently parted lips held in a slight smile. Her thick, wavy coiffure is pulled back by a bow at the nape of her neck as meandering tresses cascade down her back and chest. Size: 6.6" L x 9.8" W x 10.3" H (16.8 cm x 24.9 cm x 26.2 cm)

A highly technical sculptor, Antonio Frilli's skill is abundantly evident in the present example which embodies the principles of late 19th century academic art. Frilli's sculptures are quintessentially late Victorian, and they represent the absolute pinnacle of the fashionable taste of the time. Although little is know of the life of Frilli, the prolific gallery run by him produced a variety of commercial sculptures in marble, alabaster and bronze. He is first recorded as an exhibitor at the Espozione Nazionale di Roma in 1883, and he further exhibited in Glasgow in 1888 and Paris in 1889. He was one of a circle of renowned Florentine sculptors that comprised Cesare Lapini, Guglielmo Pugi and Ferdinando Vichi. His extraordinary technical accomplishment is seen in the almost miraculously balanced Nude Reclining in a Hammock, his own conception, known in a number of versions, one of which sold at Sotheby's New York, 3rd November 1999 for $635,000.
