Description:

North America, 19th century CE. This is a fleam, with a wooden handle and an iron blade. Fleams are handheld antique medical devices used for bloodletting. Similar devices are known as far back as Anglo-Saxon England, but the 17th century German and French Fliete and flamette respectively, with their right-angle blades, are the precursors to the fleam as we know it today. It was not until the mid-1800s that bloodletting fell out of favor, ending a very long medical tradition! Size (extended): 5.75" L x 0.8" W (14.6 cm x 2 cm)
