Description:

North America, United States, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful wooden keg of cylindrical form with one flattened side. The fascinating vessel is comprised of several thin planks of wood arranged side-by-side and strapped together horizontally with two pairs of bands - one of wood and one of iron. A petite hole for filling or emptying the keg is featured on the side and stopped with a cork. A strip of animal hide protrudes from one side, which allowed the vessel to be easily carried when travelling on foot or horseback. Kegs similar to this example were used to carry rum, whiskey, or gunpowder. Size: 10" L x 6.5" W x 8.75" H (25.4 cm x 16.5 cm x 22.2 cm)
