Description:

American School, "Still Life Newspaper Pgs. 13-24, Pipe, Tobacco, Book, Tankard, Matches" - oil on canvas, 19th century. An American trompe l'oeil still life with a charming composition that features a San Francisco newspaper, an antique tankard, a bottle of beer, a pipe, a sack of pipe tobacco, an open book faced down on the tabletop, matches, and a cracked walnut with a piece of the nut itself on the table. The genre of trompe l'oeil (deception of the eye) was given to the art of illusionism, metaphor, and allegory. Although the artist of this piece has not been identified, the painting follows the tradition of William Harnett, John Frederick Peto, and John Haberle. Size: 20.125" W x 14" H (51.1 cm x 35.6 cm)
