Description:

North America, United States, or Western Europe, ca. 19th century CE. An adjustable umbrella yarn swift crafted from wood marquetry with an ivory knob at the center. The swift features expandable struts, designed to open and close like an umbrella, allowing it to accommodate various skein sizes as it rotates around a central rod. Commonly used by knitters, crocheters, and other fiber artists in the 19th century, the swift securely holds skeins of yarn in place while the yarn is wound into balls, preventing tangling during the process. The wooden struts, joined by silk ribbons and small nails, are adjustable by a sliding ivory knob, which tightens with a threaded bolt to keep the slats extended and stable during use. While primarily a domestic tool, the elegant marquetry base indicates that it was also a decorative item, likely displayed and used on a tabletop of a middle or upper-class home. Size (fully extended): 23" diameter x 26.25" H (58.4 cm x 66.7 cm); folded: 5" W x 26.25" H (12.7 cm x 66.7 cm)
