North America, Western United States, 19th to 20th century CE. A pair of nearly identical leather arm cuffs formed from strips of tanned leather in deep hues of sienna and deep chocolate that have been rounded into a conical form. Both secured by 4 brass snap buttons along their vertical edges, these antique adornments boast a border of two incised parallel lines along their horizontal peripheries and a central 5-pointed star of 21 petite circular brass embellishments. These antique cuffs are known as roping cuffs and would have been worn by American cowboys to protect them from rope burn and barbed wire. Size of each when laid out: 12" L x 6.5" W (30.5 cm x 16.5 cm); Size of opening on larger end: 4" in diameter (10.2 cm); Size of opening on smaller end: 3" in diameter (7.6 cm)
