Description:

North America, United States or Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A nice example of a horsehair hackamore, a type of head harness for a horse that lacks a bit by design. The hackamore harness features a wide, ovoid frame, a circular frontal opening that fits around the horse's snout, and broad straps on the verso to sit both in front of and behind the ears. The hackamore is tightly woven from strands of dyed horse hair and present dense zigzagging motifs in hues of red, brown, and white. Included with the harness is a set of reins with bushy tassels and similarly dyed colors. The hackamore was an ingenious horse harness as it controlled the horse by applying pressure to certain areas of the snout rather than pull their head by tugging on one end of a bit. Size (hackamore): 22.5" L x 10.75" H (57.2 cm x 27.3 cm); (reins): 75.5" L (191.8 cm).
