Description:

**Originally Listed At $300**

North America, United States, Civil War Period, ca. 1861 to 1865 CE. A fine pair of hand-carved wooden crutches from the American Civil War. Each crutch has a lengthy, tapered body, a gently flared lower cap that is packed with bituminous padding, a steel ring around the shoulder, and a crescent-shaped head for resting beneath one's shoulder. Beneath each arm rest are two heart-shaped appliques. The Civil War saw some of the bloodiest conflicts ever fought on American soil, and injuries on the battlefield were as frequent as they were gruesome. Crutches like these aided the mobility of men who had suffered injuries to their feet, legs, or lower bodies. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 6.625" W x 46.375" H (16.8 cm x 117.8 cm)
