Description:

North America, United States, pre-Mexican American War to Civil War era, made by AM Flask & Cap Co., ca. 1840 to 1860 CE. A mold-formed flask used by soldiers to store black powder and keep it dry. The flask has a hollow, piriform body joined with solder along the seam, a cylindrical neck with a pair of triangular strap loops, and a narrow nozzle, and a tension-closed barrier with a petite exterior tab. Each side of the body displays a pair of shaking hands surrounded by radiating lines and twenty-five stars, with a shield reading "US" surrounded by horns, weapons, and standards, and an American eagle above that grasps arrows and olive branches in its talons. Atop the spout lid is a maker's mark reading "AM Flask & Cap Co.," and the letters "WS" are stamped above one eagle head. Size: 4" W x 8.5" H (10.2 cm x 21.6 cm)

  • Condition: Spout nozzle reattached with solder. Minor indentations and abrasions to body, with softening to some raised details, and extensive powder remains within body. Nice patina throughout, and iconography is still visible.
