Description:

North Africa, northern Algeria, Berber ethnic group, Kabyle (also Kabylie) culture, ca. second half of the 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-built pottery water amphora with a flat base, a broad body with a carinated midsection, a sloped shoulder that transitions into a tapered neck and a flared rim, and a pair of asymmetrical handles. The yellow-white body and handles are adorned with red and black Berber 'tattooing' motifs including a broad rectangular central panel surrounded with checker-filled triangles, broad red stripes outlined in black along the handles, and solid red pigment enveloping the neck and rim.   • Condition: Chipping to rim and tip of one handle, with abrasions and light fading to areas of exterior pigment, a few stable hairline fissures, and light encrustations. Great preservation to decorative motifs across exterior. Interior sealed with gray material, perhaps as a means of waterproofing.
